Land and Water: Plymouth Society of Artists exhibition at the Council House, Plymouth, Saturday 21 January - Saturday 4 March

Jan 28, 2017

The Plymouth History Centre is a major scheme in the heart of the city with the vision to transform the existing Museum and Art Gallery, Central Library and St Luke’s Church buildings into an ambitious new visitor attraction that highlights Plymouth and its place in the world. It is set to open in early 2020 as part of the city’s Mayflower 400 commemorations.

During the course of this development Plymouth City Museum and Art Gallery will be turning the city's Council House into an exhibition gallery as part of its ‘Museum On Tour’ programme and the Plymouth Society of Artists has been invited to open with the first of a series of exhibitions over the next three years.

Ian Bowyer, Plymouth City Council Leader said: “The ‘Museum On Tour’ programme is taking the Museum experience to many different places — not just here in Plymouth but across the region. We’re thrilled to be supporting this and to provide the Council House as a venue for what I’m sure will be a really interesting programme of changing exhibitions throughout the year.”

The PSA was established in early 1944 to encourage and foster a professional outlook in the fine arts of painting, sculpture and printmaking for the benefit of Plymouth. Seven decades have passed since then and the group has become extremely well established with many successful exhibitions and a membership drawn from throughout the region and beyond. ‘Land and Water’ is an exhibition featuring a series of works by selected members from this long-established artists group. Visitors will have the chance to purchase a unique piece of art as well as see what some of the region’s most established artists are producing.

There will be the opportunity to find out more about the Society and meet some of the members discussing the work on show in a “Bite Size” lunchtime talk on Wednesday 23 February.
